ENVIRONMENT
The British American International (BAI) Inc. Washington office
was newly established for web development, e-mail collaboration, and as
a corporate meeting facility for U. S. business. The office supported nine
(9) internal employees and forty-five (45) remote employees. The office
was not connected directly to any other corporate site and had Internet
connection via a separate ISP provider. The office was licensed for a Windows
NT 4.0 domain, Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Professional, and Exchange
5.5 messaging system.
CHALLENGE
3H Technology (3H) was tasked to design and deploy an Exchange
5.5 server for BAI. The project success depended on achieving the following
goals:
- The mail server must provide support to local users and remote users.
- Provide a secure encrypted messaging system.
- Configure anti-virus software.
- Configure an effective backup solution.
SOLUTION
The Exchange 5.5 Server was installed on a Dell 1550 system with
a 128-bit Windows 2000 Server and within the local Windows NT 4.0 domain.
3H configured the following aspects to resolve BAI's needs:
- The Exchange 5.5 server was configured to pass authentication to the Windows
NT 4.0 domain to ensure fast, reliable, and secure credentials. The Internet
Mail Service (IMS) was installed to provide message trafficking for Internet
mail supported clients and Outlook Express clients. Messaging Application
Programming Interface (MAPI) service would support local (broadcasting)
clients within the Washington office. Outlook Web Access (OWA) was installed
and configured on a separate Internet Information Service.
- A Certificate server and the Key Management Service (KMS) were installed
to provide encrypted e-mail messaging. This solution enabled the Exchange
server to issue both private and public encryption keys to designated clients
and managed both the issuing and resolution of the encrypted messages. Since
the mail server was located within the United States, mail traffic from
two foreign clients would be processed at 128-bit as opposed to the European
standard of 40-bit encryption.
- Norton Anti-Virus software was installed on the Exchange server and provided
an anti-virus filter for incoming e-mail traffic. Mail filtering rules were
enabled to restrict certain mail attachments from passing through the mail
server.· The backup solution was a two-tiered system with the Windows NT
4.0 operating system performing an online backup of the Information Store
database. Subsequently, the Veritas software backs up the NT 4.0 backup
file to tape.
